Columbia County is located in southeast Washington. The county seat is at Dayton, which is also the county's largest city. Dayton has the oldest train depot (1881) in Washington State and the oldest continuously used courthouse (1887). The historical community of Baileysburg was once located about one mile southeast of Dayton, at the junction of North Touchet and South Touchet Roads.
The County is named after the Columbia River. It is part of the Palouse, a wide and rolling prairie-like region of the middle Columbia basin. The Snake River flows throught the county. It is a major river in the greater Pacific Northwest region of the United States and is the largest and longest tributary of the Columbia River, which is the largest North American river that empties into the Pacific Ocean.
Part of the Umatilla National Forest is also in the county.
