Pend Oreille County, in the extreme northeast corner of Washington, is the long narrow strip of land bordering the Idaho Panhandle. Newport, the largest town, is the county seat. The Pend Oreille River is now partly tamed, its lakelike shores south of Box Canyon Dam lined with upscale vacation homes, while its northern reaches are still wild enough for the most adventurous. There is ample space for wildlife to thrive and plenty of opportunity for residents and tourists to enjoy its lakes, thousands of acres of forest and mountains climbing to heights of 7,500 feet. The county is a magnet for those who enjoy the outdoors, and everywhere are scenes that catch the eye.

Deer, elk, black bear, mountain goat, caribou, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, moose and even grizzly bear make the mountains and valleys their home.
